Autocross Basics

Everything you need to know to get started with autocross racing. No experience required—just bring your car and your enthusiasm.

What is Autocross?

Autocross is a timed competition where drivers navigate through a defined course marked by traffic cones, one car at a time. It's the perfect way to test your driving skills in a safe, controlled environment.

No special car required—bring what you drive daily. From sedans to sports cars, all vehicles are welcome. Courses are designed to challenge precision and control, not just speed.

What to Bring

Your Car

Any street-legal vehicle in good mechanical condition. No modifications required. Sedan, coupe, SUV—all are welcome.

Helmet

An approved helmet (Snell or DOT rated). Many clubs have loaners available if you don't have one yet.

Valid License

A current driver's license. Some events may require registration in advance—check the schedule.

Time & Energy

Events typically run 4-6 hours. Arrive early, stay for the whole event, and be ready to help with course work.

Positive Attitude

Come ready to learn, have fun, and meet fellow enthusiasts. Everyone was a beginner once!

Optional Items

Sunscreen, water, snacks, folding chair, and tools for minor adjustments to your car.

What to Expect

1

Registration & Tech Inspection

Sign in, pay entry fee, and have your car inspected for basic safety (secure battery, working brakes, no loose items). This is quick and straightforward.

2

Driver's Meeting

A brief meeting to go over the day's schedule, safety rules, and course layout. First-timers will get special attention and guidance.

3

Course Walk

Walk the course on foot to learn the layout, identify tricky sections, and plan your racing line. Experienced drivers will offer tips.

4

Practice Runs

You'll typically get 3–6 timed runs throughout the day. Each run lasts about a minute. Between runs, you'll help with course work (resetting cones, timing, etc.).

5

Results & Awards

At the end of the day, results are posted. Awards are given to top finishers in each class. Even if you don't win, you'll have data to track your improvement.

Safety First

Autocross is one of the safest forms of motorsport, but we take safety seriously.

  • One car at a time — No contact with other vehicles
  • Low-speed environment — Courses designed for control, not top speed
  • Open space with run-off — Plenty of room if you go off course
  • Experienced safety crew — Trained staff monitoring every run
  • Mandatory helmet use — Protection for all drivers
